How to get international driving permit in Nigeria

A problem faced by most persons travelling outside their country is being able to drive cars when they get to their travel destinations.  This is due to the fact that they don’t know where to get the International Driving Permit in Nigeria and as such, they rather stay away from driving. This article will help you with all you need to know on how to get an International Driving Permit in Nigeria.

Firstly, an International Driving Permit is an identification document which you will need if you want to drive private vehicles outside your country.  A bit bigger than your average passport in size, it comes with basically the same bio-data you will find in a passport  or a national drivers license.

To get an International Driving Permit in Nigeria here’s what you'll need:

·         A valid local driver’s license

·         Some cash (ranging from N6,000-N11,000 depending on years of validity requested)

·         Passport sized colored photographs

·         Then finally, you have to locate the FRSC (Federal Road Safety Corp) command nearest to you. To help you , below are links to the addresses of the unit, sector and zonal commands of the FRSC.
  • Ordinarily you will be subjected to driving tests before the document will be issued to you.

  • After this, they will get your Bio-data and then give you a date to come back for the document.

In case you are in an area where the FRSC there do not offer this service in their command, you can send your details to any relative/friend residing in the bigger cities. They can help you apply for what is known as “non-appearance issuance”.  Forget the officialspeak, it simply means that you will get the document without having to appear at the command.

Word on the street is that you have to add a little cash to pacify the officials and also send a scanned copy of your signature. THIS IS A CRIME.

How long does it last?
An international driving permit comes with different validity periods and each comes with its own price tag.

  • The lowest duration is for a year (priced at around N6, 000) while the highest is for 3 years (priced at around N11, 000).
  • You can also get a validity period of 2 years at around N8, 000. So you can choose how many years you want to pay for, depending on how long you are staying abroad.
So, there you go.

In case you do learn any other ways of doing these, please post them in the comments so I can update for future visitors. All the best.
