How to sign Up for NYSC as a foreign based Nigerian

The NYSC (National Youth Service Corp) is a program set up by the federal government of Nigeria in 1973 geared towards fostering unity amongst Nigerians. It’s a program that can only be signed up for by Nigerian graduates of institutions of higher learning living both in Nigeria and abroad. In this article we will be looking at how to sign up for NYSC as a foreign based Nigerian.

Entry into the NYSC programs is run 3 times a year. Each window is denoted by either Batch A, B or C. Under normal circumstances, the batch A program is usually run in February while the batch B and C is run in June and October respectively.

As a foreign student, you need to keep an eye on the NYSC website at www.nysc.gov.ng to know when activities in preparation of an entry window have started. As soon as the activities start, you can then come back to the country to sign up or do your registration.

Do not bother trying to send a relative to help you out with the process as they no longer allow registration by proxy. Here’s a list of what you will need for your registration:

·         West African Examinations Council (WAEC) certificate or its equivalent like NECO and GCE

·         Your Degree certificate

·         A complete transcript of your Degree (Persons coming from Indian schools can bring Mark-sheets)

·         International Nigerian Passport Showing your first departure date, student visa and last arrival date. Also come along with your other passport if you have dual citizenship.

·         Receipts of registration with professional bodies in Nigeria if you are a medical student

·         Lots of passport sized photographs.

Once you have all these, you can then go to the NYSC office in your state of origin and complete your registration. You will also collect your call-up letter from the same office when the time comes. It is always advisable to be in the country at least 1 month before the NYSC camp opening date. This is to enable you go through all the administrative bottle necks on ground without running behind schedule and also give yourself ample time to get ready for where you will be posted. Contrary to claims in some quarters, foreign trained students do not have any special treatments reserved for them and they cannot decide on where they want to do their service year.

This is all you need to know about how to sign up for NYSC as a foreign based Nigerian. So you can start making preparations now in readiness for the next mobilization window.
