How to report or block a stolen phone in Nigeria

Due to the increase in the number of cases of stolen phones, it is very important that you know how to report or block a stolen phone in Nigeria. While no one is praying for you to lose your phone, it is advisable to read the article for educational purposes. Who knows, you may be helping your friend!

In advanced countries, all you had to do was pop into the nearest police station and make your report.  The police are the ones that will try to recover the phone for you and if all attempts fail, they will now block it permanently. Unfortunately, that is a luxury we can’t afford in Nigeria. The police force here struggles immensely in trying to recover missing persons let alone mobile phones!

To block a phone, the most common way is to send the IMEI number of the phone to your service provider asking them to block the phone. IMEI stands for (International Mobile Equipment Identity) and can be found behind your phone when you remove the battery. You can also get it by dialing *#06# on your phone. The number should appear on the screen. If you haven’t written down this number somewhere, you may want to do so now and also advice your friends to do so. You won’t gain anything by having your phone rendered useless but at least you will be happy that the person using it will not enjoy it.

Another method you can use is by using mobile antivirus software known as NETQUIN. This may sound like a paid advert for them (wish it wasJ), but the software helps you to know when the SIM card in your phone gets changed. A message will be sent to a number you must have provided while setting up the software. At that point you will have the option of remotely locking the phone and setting off an alarm. At this point you may be lucky and the thief will call you back to negotiate on how you can get back the phone.

If he or she decides to keep the phone, you will then have to remotely delete all the private data you have on the phone ranging from photos to texts and contacts. One other good thing with this antivirus software is that it also has provision for contact cloud backup. This means that your contacts will be uploaded to their servers and you can always use the username created while setting up the process to recover your contacts.

This is how to report or block a stolen phone in Nigeria. It’s high time we began frustrating phone thieves also!
